Understanding Science Fiction

Science Fiction is groundbreaking in it's approach to social issues by framing them in a new setting. Authors like Octavia Butler have taken a believable futuristic world and examined controversial topics like ongoing racism, gender inequality, environmental issues, religions, sexual identity, etc. Science Fiction is brilliant, because it fails to be contained by rules. There is nothing you can't create in the future, because the future is only a possibility.

The goal for my blog is to isolate these complex issues underlined by Octavia Butler, create questions of why these issues are being discussed, and formulate thoughtful discussion on the broader issues at hand.

"For me Science Fiction is a way of thinking, a way of logic that bypasses a lot of nonsense. It allows people to look directly at important subjects." - Gene Roddenberry, creator of Star Trek

  1. Wonderful post. Love the Roddenberry quote, too, of course!
